Job Description

Our client, a well-established company in the shipping industry, seeks to recruit a Head of Accounting.

Main responsibilities

  • Manages and oversees the daily operations of the accounting department
  • Monitors the timely and accurate bookkeeping of all entries submitted by accounting personnel in relation to the company and SPVs apart from entries related to period end activities, financial statements closing process, vessels’ CAPEX & DD, bunkers, revenues/brokers cycle, insurances, loans and finance or legal costs
  • Monitors completeness of vessels’ Operating and D/As expenses and office expenses on a monthly basis
  • Supervises OPEX actual vs budget reports
  • Prepares and reports monthly cash flow for vessels’ expenses
  • Checks daily cash balance of company's accounts, and manages all bank accounts
  • Reviews vessels’ taxation (Greek, MI and Maltese tonnage taxes)
  • Reconciliates staff taxation – social security contributions – submission of monthly tax declarations to authorities in conjunction with administration department
  • Reviews Crew taxation – submission of monthly / annual tax declarations and vessels’ social security contributions (NAT) reconciliation in conjunction with crew department
  • Submits VAT declarations and handles any claim arising from VAT refund
  • Prepares annual report of activities to Greek Ministries
  • Is responsible for Greek tax audit of company's Greek Branch
  • Supervises preparation of invoices relating to intercompany transactions  or non-related parties owners of vessels under the company's management
  • Reviews Trial Balances of the company and SPVs and performance of necessary reconciliations
  • Reviews bank reconciliations and petty cash reconciliations along with Group Financial Controller
  • Confirms and authorizes bank transactions, according to approved payments’ schedule, relating to the company's accounts and ensuring that suppliers, key stakeholders of the company's accounting are satisfied and receive timely the funds for the settlement of outstanding invoices
  • Is responsible for accounts payable /receivable, cash receipts of invoices issued by the company, general ledger, company's fixed assets register activity and reconciliation with accounting records and trust accounts payable statement reconciliations
  • Monitors inventories for victualling and lubricants on a monthly basis
  • Is responsible for proper invoices posting in SAP and control accounts used and check proper approvals for invoices ready for payment
  • Controls the opening of new suppliers in SAP or changes in the existing suppliers
  • Controls, monitors and checks of MGA reports and monthly reconciliations
  • Reviews site office monthly reconciliations and supervises site office payroll and relevant cash management in cooperation with Group Financial Controller
  • Cooperates with the Group Financial Controller for books closing / period end activities of the company and SPVs
  • Maintains Greek statutory books and records for the company

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting / Finance; Master’s degree in relevant field will be considered a plus
  • At least 5 years of working experience as Accounting Manager / Head of Accounting department
  • Experience in working in Accounting Department of private shipping companies is a must
  • Professional experience in a Big4 company will be considered a plus
  • Excellent knowledge of Greek regulations around bookkeeping and taxation
  • Excellent knowledge of MS Office (proficiency in Excel spreadsheets)
  • Familiarity with SAP will be considered an asset
  • Excellent command of the English language, both verbal and written
